A car lockout feels urgent, but the first ten minutes decide whether it costs nothing or costs a window. Work through this list in order.

1. Walk around the whole car

Try every door, the tailgate and the hatch. Many cars only lock the driver's door from the handle button, and a rear door is often still open.

2. Is a child or pet inside?

If so, call 911 before anything else. A closed car heats up fast, even on a mild Colorado day with the windows cracked.

3. Skip the coat hanger

Modern doors hide airbags, wiring and trim behind the glass. Wire and wedges scratch glass, tear seals and pull connectors loose.

4. Check what you already have

A spare key at home, a roadside plan on your insurance card, or a connected-car app can all unlock the doors for free.

5. Call someone with the right tools

A Fort Collins locksmith opens the door with tools that slide between the seal and the frame without marking either. If the key is lost rather than locked in, a new key or fob can be cut and programmed at the car.
